Tame Impala
Tame Impala is the movement in Orion's nebula and the slime from a snail journeying across a footpath. To humans however, Tame Impala is more of a 'music ensemble', but its various other forms should not be disregarded (colour that humans can see is only a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum, the rest is just as important to other things!)

Tame Impala's debut record from 2010, "Innerspeaker," received a tropically warm reception thanks in part to its irreverent, contemporary spin on assumedly dead and forgotten sounds, as well as its unique, infinitely surprising way around a melody. It was youthful, romantic songwriting in a melting technicolour dreamcoat.

Critics agreed, with Pitchfork awarding the album its 'Best New Music' designation the week of release. "Innerspeaker" featured prominently on 2010 end-of-year Best Of lists from Pitchfork, Stereogum, Urban Outfitters, self-titled magazine, and was warmly received by not only music press but also the wider media, with features in publications as diverse as Spin, Nylon, Esquire, LA Times, Billboard, Interview, The Last Magazine, and many more. The band capped the year off with their live television debut on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon."

Throughout 2010 and 2011, the band were welcomed by fans in stages the world over, with a touring schedule that included highlights such as Coachella, Glastonbury, Big Day Out, Roskilde, Fuji Rock and T In The Park.

Since they finished touring "Innerspeaker," one half of the band (Jay Watson & Nick Allbrook) have been on the road with offshoot band Pond, while Kevin Parker went deep into the wormhole making album #2. Since its completion earlier in the year, guitarist and keyboard player Dom Simper has recorded his own solo cover version of album #2 in preparation for the forthcoming live circus.

Their second record, "Lonerism," is due in October 9, 2012.

Tame Impala are Kevin Parker, Dom Simper and Jay Watson. Kevin and Dom have been musical companions for a good 9 years, having met at music class in high school at age 13, sometime after Kevin had began honing his primitive self recording skills as a way of putting tune to his newly learned drum beats. They found Jay sometime last year in rural Western Australia and admired his groovebrain and corresponding wrist movement. By stroke of luck he was moving to Perth with another band and this allowed them to jam.

The Tame Impala sound is one equally informed by The Beatles as it is beat poetry, by Turkish prog as it is by Turkish delight, and by English folk as much as homeless folk, and it's a breathe of fresh air that reeks of all of these at times and none at others.

Anyway, the band still enjoy recording music at home and getting up on the roof when weather permits. With the songs-vat (the apparatus used for storing songs) showing weakness and beginning to split at the seams, it's lucky they have secured a recording deal. An EP of home recordings is due out sometime soon.

The EP is 5 tracks of untamed enthusiasm and unexpected delight. Beginning with Desire Be, Desire Go's endlessly looping, loose groove verses, to Slide Through My Fingers rollicking desert trip of a journey, Half Full Glass Of Wine's half-speed double-awesome riffing, 41 Mosquitoes Flying In Formation's unstoppable shake and Skeleton Tiger's marching band drums and haunting lead guitar, the Tame Impala EP is a beautiful snapshot into what lies within this beast.

Listening to The Growl’s colossal sound – built up in layers of percussion, with guitar tones one music critic aptly described as leaving the taste of iron on your tongue – it is hard to believe the band began as simply as a bedroom recording project between two friends. Seeing them live, as a six‐ piece dual‐drummer wall of sound, more so. And while the core of the band is still founding members front‐man Cameron Avery and bassist Clinton Oliver, it is safe to say the band has come a very long way in a very short time.
In December last year the band locked themselves and a stack of old recording gear into a derelict and deserted loft above the streets of Perth city. With the roof literally coming down around them they set about recording their debut album. Eight months later the first single is ready to be released. Confusingly titled Cleaver Lever, the same name as their debut EP, the track embodies the evolution of The Growl’s sound.

Self‐recorded and produced, Cleaver Lever is a worthy addition to a stunning body of work emanating from the current pool of musicians in the West Australian city of Fremantle. With Cameron Avery’s other band Pond (in which he plays drums) having recently released their new album to a stunning reception across Europe and the US, and with Tame Impala doing all of the amazing things they are doing, the Fremantle music scene has produced some of the most interesting and imaginative music of the last few years ‐ and that’s just looking at the bands the world outside of Australia knows about.

Back at home, The Growl have had a fairly speedy rise to prominence. In addition to being Unearthed by Australian Radio Station Triple J for the Big Day Out in 2012, The Growl found a very strong grassroots following upon debuting as a live act in 2010. Community radio loved them, other bands loved them, and within a year The Growl were capable of selling out big shows to an increasingly diverse audience.
The band began touring Australia, and the more they played live the more intense and abstract the live performance became, which in turn continued to shape and expand the band’s songwriting, musical capabilities and personnel.
Cleaver Lever is a significant event in this continuing evolution of the band.

Intense and sideways, but also so familiar and beautiful‐sounding, Cleaver Lever is a lot of different things rolled into one... and while journalists often find themselves describing The Growl in vivid and colourful language, the common consensus is always that there is just something inexplicable and magical to what this band can do.
